Bandaging Basics:
Bandaging legs is a skill every horse owner should have and idealy have practiced long before it is needed. Situations when you may wish to bandage a horse’s legs are
- To cover and protect an injury either to offer support or to keep a wound clean
- To provide warmth to stiff/old tendons, ligaments or fetlock problems.
- To control swelling and movement with acure injuries
- To protect during travelling
Improperly applied bandages can do a lot of damage. The blood supply to the tendons in the back of the horse’s leg is easily compromised if the wrap is too tight, if it is applied with uneven pressure or if it slips down and bunches up as a result.
The use of leg wraps under bandages can help to minimise the damage of over tight bandages and offers additional warm with this is required.
