What are tugs?
The tugs are used to support the shafts on a driving saddle. Despite the implication of the name, the tugs do not pull the vehicle in any way. Their purpose is simply to guide and support the shafts. If the vehicle is correctly balanced there should be no weight placed on the tugs when the passengers are all on board. The shafts should appear to “float” within the tugs. The tugs also have a secondary breaking function due to the tug stops on the shafts. When the vehicle is stopping or going downhill the shafts run forward slightly in the tugs until they reach the tug stops. The majority of the breaking must always be carried out by the breeching so this really is just an extra system.
