The saddle of a driving harness, also known as the pad, acts as an anchor for attaching many of the key parts of the harness. It is held in place by the girth and supported further by the crupper which prevents it being pushed forwards if the shafts run forward putting pressure on the driving pad.
Attached to the saddle are the tugs which the shafts pass through, this enables the carriage to be moved to the left or the right by the horse. Finally the false bellyband connects between the two tugs under the horse’s belly to prevent the shafts from lifting or bouncing excessively.
